My first ragging experience

My first ragging experience was one of very pleasant and memorable.On my first day in the Department of Botany,University of Delhi in July 1973, I was called by one of our seniors known as Deputy and told me to greet the senior girl students which I shyly did. He then asked me whether I can sing to which I replied in affirmative much to their amusement and surprise. I sang my favourite Mukesh number from film Andaz i.e.Jhoom Jhoom Ke nacho aj...and became very popular as singer in the Deptt. and enjoyed singing on the annual functions and parties .Later I was given Ice cream treat by the respected seniors which I remember to date.
These days ragging has become a very traumatic experience for the freshers and most ironic thing is that the medical colleges ;where students become Doctors who are supposed to be very compassionate and caring ; are also known for the worst ragging places. Drunken seniors beating
mercilessly timid and scared freshers has become the order of the day.
It can only be stopped by very strict legislation and parents and teachers counselling of seniors to be very friendly with the freshers.
